Join Us to Discuss Draft Regional Density Policy Recommendations

Metro Cities, in collaboration with the Metropolitan Council, will host two opportunities for city officials and staff to learn about draft policy on minimum density recommendations that may be proposed for the next regional development guide. The purpose of these conversations will be to inform city officials on the recommendations and to provide an opportunity for questions and feedback. These forums are virtual and are being held ahead of the public comment period that will begin in August.

City elected officials and staff are welcome to attend! Two dates are offered; choose which works best for your schedule: July 9th from 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm or July 16th, from 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm. Below are links to the draft land use policy chapter as well as a 2050 density analysis report, for background information and context.

Please email Jennifer Dorn at [email protected] if you would like to attend and which date, and a Zoom link will be sent to you in advance.

2024 Metro Cities Policy Committees

Metro Cities policy committee process will begin in July, and four committees will recommend the association’s legislative policies for 2025. Participation is open to member city elected officials and staff. Committee descriptions and dates are on the website. Please be sure to sign up for the committee(s) you wish to attend. We look forward to seeing you this summer!

Retail Delivery Fee Begins July 1

The 50-cent fee on retail delivery orders of $100 or more goes into effect on July 1, 2024. The fee was part of the 2023 omnibus transportation bill. Revenues will be directed to cities via the Transportation Advancement Account (TAA). Drugs, medical devices, accessories, supplies, and food are among the items/orders exempted from the fee. The logic behind the fee is that increased online ordering activity places additional strain on the transportation system.

Estimated city allocations from the TAA are available to view on MnDOT’s website. The Transportation Advancement Account is distributed as follows: 36% to metropolitan counties, 10% to the CSAH system, 15% to a newly established Larger Cities Assistance Account, 27% to the Small Cities Assistance Account, 11% to the Town Road Account, and 1% to a food delivery support account.

Click HERE to view the full distribution of funding to each of the accounts that make up the TAA and HERE to view more information and city-specific amounts for cities. Click HERE for more information on how the delivery fee will be collected and calculated.
